Privacy should be simple. We collect as little as possible, use it only when necessary, and never sell your information.

What we collect

The only information we ask for is your email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to our newsletter or contact us directly.

This website uses no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking cookies.

The newsletter

If you subscribe, your email address is managed by Buttondown, our email provider, and used only to send occasional updates about Latent.

Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can leave at any time.

Your photographs

Latent is a darkroom, not a cloud service.

Your photographs remain on your device. We do not receive, store, or have access to them — with one exception: work you deliberately publish through a Latent app’s community, described below.

If you choose to use iCloud Photos or iCloud Drive, that synchronization is provided by Apple through your own account and remains under your control.

The Moment and The Ritual community

The Moment and Latent The Ritual offer the same two ways to share, and both are opt-in. Nothing is shared unless you choose to share it.

A Circle is a small, private shared album. Everything a Circle holds — its members, photographs, videos, notes, and keeps — is looked after by Latent’s own community service, and only the people invited into that Circle can see it. Like any shared album that delivers photographs between phones, the service can read what it carries; ordinary Circle content is private to its members, not encrypted end-to-end.

Envelopes — the Circle’s private messages — are sealed on the sender’s device before they travel. Our service delivers them without holding the keys; only Circle members can open them.

The Field is the public space shared by The Moment and The Ritual. Joining it creates a community account with a handle and a display name, and anything you publish there — photographs, titles, captions, notes — becomes visible to other members, associated with your handle. Latent’s community service keeps only what the feature needs: your account, your profile, what you publish, and the notes, keeps, appreciations, and follows you place.

Field and Circle content is stored by Latent’s community service on Cloudflare. It is not stored in iCloud and does not use your iCloud space.

Photographs you publish carry no location data, even if location was recorded when they were taken — that stays on your device.

If you turn on community notifications, your device’s delivery address for them (its push token) is registered with our service and used only for delivery. If you report content or a member, the report comes to us and is used only to look after the community. Blocking someone is remembered so their work stays out of your view.

You can take back a published post at any time, close a Circle you own, leave a Circle, and delete your community account entirely from inside the app. What you take back is removed from our service; a copy someone already saved to their own device is beyond our reach — as with anything shared.

Payments

Latent apps are distributed through the App Store, and any purchase is processed by Apple. We never receive your payment card details.

Nothing is sold directly from this website. If that changes, this page will name the payment provider and what it passes to us before anything is offered.

Services we rely on

We keep our tools few.

• Buttondown for newsletters.
• Apple for Sign in with Apple, push notifications, App Store services, and any Apple Photos or iCloud features you choose to use. Apple does not host Field or Circle content for Latent.
• Cloudflare, whose infrastructure runs this website and the community service behind the Field and Circles.

Each service maintains its own privacy policy.

Your choices

You may unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time.

You may also ask us to delete any personal information we hold by writing to [email protected].

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information. We will honor those rights where applicable.

Children

Latent is not intended for children under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and revise the date above.
